(Bugout.news) For many, it is difficult to imagine that American cities could dissolve into cauldrons of violence and chaos, but that’s exactly what could happen if Donald Trump wins in November and millions of anti-Trump haters decide they’d rather burn the country down than let him run it.
With that in mind, it will be extremely important for city dwellers who want to survive the chaos to learn and master several skills that will enable them to eventually escape the madness for safer environs.
First things first – provisions. You’re going to have to carry everything you will need to survive for several days, until you can reach assistance or a collective of other survivors who will take you in. Food and water, then, will take up a sizeable portion of your bugout bag. Remember to pack food that does not have to be reconstituted with water; you will need every ounce of water you can carry to survive. Humans don’t last long without it.
Next, you’ll need some very basic health care items. Tylenol/ibuprofen for aches, pains, fever and swelling; a box of band-aids of various sizes for small cuts and blisters; a tube of antibiotic cream to fight infections after being cut; a large bandage; an Ace wrap; water purification tablets; and any medications you’re currently taking. Honestly, unless you’re a paramedic or a nurse, most won’t know how to use much else.
Clothing should be seasonal, of course, and you need to have a good pair of shoes (or preferably ankle-high boots) that are already broken in. If they are water-proof, that’s even better. If you live in a place where it gets cold, you will likely have to scrounge around for something heavier to wear. That’s just the way it is.
Now, moving through a chaotic city will be tricky, so before you head out, know where you’re going. Aimless wandering will get you in a lot of trouble. Once you begin your escape, the main thing to remember is to avoid getting in the middle of anything like a riot or looting. Be as inconspicuous as possible. Move quickly from point to point and don’t talk to anyone. If you can cover your face, do so. Be anonymous. Always scan ahead and look up, down and side-to-side. Keep your head on a swivel; don’t become fixated on something or let anything distract you. There are lots of places where an enemy can hide in the city; be ready for anything because you don’t know what’s lurking behind the next corner.
As for self-defense, you may live in a city that has strict gun laws, but in a situation where the civil society has collapsed and there is no structure or law and order, do you what you have to do to protect yourself. That is a decision you will have to make on your own; understand that at some point, order will likely return and you may be held responsible for any actions you take. Choose your weapons wisely. If you decide to arm yourself with a gun, also arm yourself with a knife you can conceal (and use for any number of other things).
It may take you a couple of days to hike out of danger, so if you have to stop for the night, find a place that is out of the way and obscure, like an abandoned building or factory. Make sure there is more than one way out. In the morning before you head out again, take a few moments to scan the area first; if there are people about, you can either wait until they are gone or, if there are great crowds of people, you can just blend in and be on your way.
It’s not likely that all forms of communication will be cut immediately, so if you’ve got a smart phone or some other device that has a map, that will help you out tremendously. Even so, as a backup, you should get a map of your city and keep it with your bugout gear. Spend a little time mapping out an escape route, but be sure to have a Plan B and even a Plan C in case your initial route is blocked.
Finally, you shouldn’t expect much help or good will from people. If the situation is completely out of hand, the authorities are going to spread thin, gangs will have free reign to terrorize, rob, kill and loot, and the “good people” won’t lend you much assistance because they’ll be worried about their own survival.
In summary, get prepared now, make a plan, acquire your gear, and keep it with you always. You never know where you’ll be when the stuff hits the fan.
