(Trump.news) Prospective GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump is battling with the mainstream media again, but as usual, his criticism is spot-on.
On Tuesday following the Memorial Day holiday, reporters cornered the Republican leader at Trump Tower in New York, where his main offices are located, and began an inquisition of sorts over how much money he has donated to veterans’ groups after holding a special fundraiser for them in January when he opted out of a Fox News-sponsored GOP debate. In the past Trump has said he raised about $6 million for various military-themed organizations.
But the mainstream media has been suspicious of the event and the stated amount of money ever since. Rather than praise him for doing something no other presidential contender had done or offered to do – including his likely opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton – the media has lobbed one “gotcha” question after another at Trump, all while pretending that such questions are just part of the normal process of scrutinizing presidential contenders, and all while failing to scrutinize further Clinton’s use of a private email system while serving as secretary of state.
As reported by The Hill:
Donald Trump lashed out at the press over scrutiny of the money he raised to donate to veterans groups, in one instance pointing to a reporter and calling him a “sleaze.”
At a press conference in Trump Tower on Tuesday, Trump announced that he’d give $6 million — including $1 million of his money — to a variety of veterans groups.
But Trump became irritated by reporters who questioned why it had taken so long to make the donation, noting that Trump held the fundraiser for veterans all the way back in January.
“It seems to me you’re resistant to the kind of scrutiny that you get with running for president of the United States?” said CNN anchor Jim Acosta.
Trump responded: “I like scrutiny, but you know what, when I raise money — excuse me, excuse me, I’ve watched you on television and you’re a real beauty — when I raise money for the veterans, and it’s a massive amount of money — find out how much Hillary Clinton has given to the veterans, it’s nothing.”
“I don’t want the credit for it, but I don’t want to be lambasted,” Trump added.
Trump explained further that one of the reasons why it has taken so long to distribute the money raised that night is because various groups selected to receive donations from the event have to be properly vetted, and that takes time. He said some groups that he already knew about and had earlier dealings with got money quicker than others who had to be vetted.
“You have to go through a process. When you send checks for hundreds of thousands of dollars to people and to companies and to groups that you’ve never heard of, charitable organizations, you have to vet it,” Trump said, according to Politico. “You send people out. You do a lot of work. Now, most of the money went out quite a while ago — some of it went out more recently,” he added.
Trump then went after the media for trifling with all of this.
“Instead of being like, ‘Thank you very much, Mr. Trump,’ or ‘Trump did a good job,’ everyone said: ‘Who got it? Who got it? Who got it?’” Trump said. “And you make me look very bad. I have never received such bad publicity for doing a good job.”
He also singled reporters out, including Tom Llamas, a pretend journalist with ABC News.
“I could have asked all these groups to come here and I didn’t want to do that. I’m not looking for credit. But what I don’t want is when I raise millions of dollars, have people say, like this sleazy guy right over here from ABC,” Trump said, pointing to Llamas. “He’s a sleaze in my book. You’re a sleaze because you know the facts and you know the facts well.”
For her part Clinton, in a safe interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper recently, had the gall to criticize Trump’s fundraiser as well, as if she’d ever thought about doing such a thing (or even had the political clout to pull it off).
“Well, I think the problem here is the difference between what Donald Trump says and what Donald Trump does,” Clinton told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “He’s bragged for months about raising $6 million for veterans and donating a million dollars himself. But it took a reporter to shame him into actually making his contribution and getting the money to veterans. Look, I’m glad he finally did, but I don’t know that he should get much credit for that.”
Nobody shames Donald Trump into doing anything, least of all a mainstream media reporter – or, for that matter, a political charlatan like Hillary Clinton.
