Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was the only thus far in a crowded GOP field to drop some political truth bombs regarding Barack Obama’s never-ending push to fundamentally transform America into something that the founding fathers would never recognize (unless, of course, they were looking across the Atlantic Ocean).
In a recent Republican debate, Cruz noted that Obama is attempting to use the United Nations as a means to circumvent Congress and the Constitution, one of the many ways he has tried to impose his will and see his agenda enacted.
Answering a question from CNN debate moderator Jake Tapper regarding an earlier pledge he made to “rip up” the Obama Administration’s nuclear deal with Iran, Cruz said that the Islamic republic being in possession of nuclear weapons would be “the single biggest national security threat facing America…”
“[This nuclear deal] is nothing short of catastrophic,” he said. “This deal, on its face, will send over $100 billion to the Ayatollah Khamenei [Iran’s supreme leader] making the Obama administration the world’s leading financier of radical Islamic terrorism.”
Continuing, Cruz noted, “This deal abandons four American hostages in Iran [who were released in mid-January, only to have Iran take three new American hostages a few days later] and this deal will only accelerate Iran’s acquiring nuclear weapons.”
“You’d better believe it,” he said, “if I am elected president, on the very first day in office I will rip to shreds this catastrophic Iranian nuclear deal.”
Tapper then repeated a charge by low-tier GOP presidential contender Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a former U.S. congressman, that such behavior proves Cruz’s inexperience, a charge he dismissed. Then, he made clear what Obama’s real intentions are:
What President Obama wants to do is run to the United Nations and wants to use the United Nations to bind the United States and take away our sovereignty. I spent five and a half years as the Solicitor General of Texas and U.S. Supreme Court and I went in front of the U.S. Supreme Court and took it on [the World Court and the United Nations] and we won a historic victory saying the World Court and U.N. has no power to bind the United States, no president, Republican or Democrat, has the authority to give away our sovereignty. If there is anyone up here who would be bound by this catastrophic deal with Iran, they are giving up the core responsibility of commander in chief and as president I would never do that.
As Cruz (and others) pointed out, the nuclear deal did indeed free up billions in frozen assets that Iran has already transferred out of banks in allied countries taking part in the sanctions regime to other countries where it is now protected.
What worries Cruz and others in the presidential race are that Tehran would use at least some of the money to fund terrorist and other militant activities throughout the Middle East that are harmful to U.S. national interests and those of our allies – something the Obama administration and most Left-wing media discounted.
And yet, almost on cue, the Obama administration admitted that yes, Iran was likely to spend some of its newly reclaimed booty to do just that.
“WH concedes it’s likely Iran will continue to support terrorism with funds unfrozen by US and others as part of nuke deal implementation,” tweeted CBS News’ White House correspondent, Mark Knoller, 21 Jan, 2016.
Sometimes it’s no fun being right.
How many U.S. forces or civilians will be killed and wounded because of Iranian-funded terrorism – not to mention the nuclear threat Tehran will eventually pose – remains unclear, but the blood will most definitely be on the hands of those who made this deal, not on those of the president who tears it up.
