Orange County couple spends $100K on world’s scariest haunted house

A haunted house located in Tustin, California is getting ghastly reviews as fright seekers are required to sign a waiver in order to enjoy the haunt.

Created by a Tustin couple who spent a whopping $100,000 on its design, per its name, the 17th Door offers 17 different interactive rooms that cater to all five senses, allowing participants to experience extreme claustrophobia, foul scents, strobe lighting, fog, dizziness, extreme temperatures and loud noises, according to the haunted house’s website, which is entertaining in and of itself.

Fear lovers will spend one minute in each scare room, only being allowed to escape if they murmur the safe word “mercy.” Since the haunted house opened on September 25, at least 350 people have screamed “mercy.”

Reeling in popularity, the California haunted house is receiving a whopping 800 visitors each night, with most of them describing the experience as being incredibly “intense,” reports KABC-TV.

The 17th Door pushes thrill seekers through “thematical material such as suicide, assault, drug use and bullying,” as well as eating disorders and schizophrenia.

Couple gets creative in finding new ways to disturb and offend people

“There’s a lot going on, where it’s very interactive and immersive and kind of invades your space. You will get touched and you might get wet,” co-creator Heather Luther told KABC-TV in an interview.

As the Daily Mail reports: “Visitors are locked in each room at the fictional medical college of Gluttire for about 90 seconds at a time until a school bell rings and they move to the next, scarier experience.”

Despite its horrific nature, co-creator Robbie Luther insists the 17th Door is “far more tame” than he had originally intended.

“My original plan was to do a haunted house so extreme and awesome that it would get protested by all these groups and then I would get shut down, Robbie Luther told the LA Times. “Some of my original ideas were pretty far out.”

Robbie Luther said it was always he and his wife’s dream to build their own haunted house, giving them an edge in terms of originality.

“I actually think it’s an advantage that we have never done any haunted houses,” Luther said. “People seem to think we have a really unique look. That’s just because we’ve never done it. We just wanted it to look awesome.”

Prepare to get licked by a monster!

The couple dedicated nearly their entire lives to the endeavor, with Robbie Luther spending up to 120 hours per week in constructing the haunted house.

“It makes me sick to my stomach to think of all the work that’s gone into this place,” he added.

“I’m passionate about building things and pushing the envelope,” Luther said. “This is just an awesome canvas to be creative and put on a show.”

The LA Times described the premise of the haunted house in detail:

Set at a medical college, the 17th Door’s well-developed backstory follows a troubled student named Paula who battles a host of demons ranging from drug abuse and an eating disorder to bullying and suicide. Paula’s personal demons show up as physical manifestations in the college’s classrooms, dormitories, cafeteria, library and locker room. Sometimes Paula is in the room with you and other times you view the scene from Paula’s point of view.

The 30-minute experience unfolds in 17 locked rooms that rival movie sets for their intense attention to detail. Visitors will be pulsed through in small groups of approximately eight people and spend about 90 seconds in each room. And there’s a good chance you will get wet – either from a putrid toilet or by a monster’s tongue.
