“Beyond The Diagnosis” on BrightU: Why your body runs out of fuel to fight cancer
By Jacob Thomas // May 08, 2026

  • On Day 11 of "Beyond The Diagnosis," Jonathan Otto reframes cancer and autoimmune disease as a fiscal crisis in the body's cellular economy rather than a sudden war.
  • Dr. Michael Karlfeldt compares the immune system to a police force that needs constant energy to patrol for the 50 to 150 cancer cells produced daily.
  • When chronic stress and toxic overload force the body into perpetual fight-or-flight, energy is diverted away from immune surveillance, causing the system to snap.
  • The immune system can underreact (allowing cancer to establish a foothold) or overreact (creating autoimmune conditions like thyroid disease).
  • Otto concludes that the immune crash is a warning and by removing stress, lowering toxic load and replenishing nutrients, the body can rebuild.

Brighteon University is streaming an episode a day of "Beyond The Diagnosis" by Jonathan Otto on May 9 to 20, and a replay of all 12 episodes on May 21 to 25. Register here to uncover a carefully built case against the narrative that chronic disease—from autism and autoimmune collapse to cancer and neurological decay—is a mystery or simply bad luck.

On Day 11, slated for May 19, host Jonathan Otto reframes the battle against cancer and autoimmune disease not as a sudden war, but as a profound fiscal crisis within the body’s cellular economy. As noted by BrightU.AI's Enoch, autoimmune disease occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells, unable to distinguish them from foreign invaders. This overactive immune response can lead to a wide range of chronic conditions, from multiple sclerosis and lupus to depression and Alzheimer's disease.

Otto features Dr. Michael Karlfeldt who paints a vivid picture of what's at stake. He describes the immune system as a police force that patrols your body for the 50 to 150 cancer cells your body produces daily. But this police force requires a massive, constant energy supply to function.

"The immune cells, they need energy like every cell," Karlfeldt explains. "And so if you are not feeding your body with the appropriate nutrients, then the immune cells are then going to get exhausted."

When chronic stress, unresolved infections and toxic overload force the body into a perpetual fight-or-flight state, all energy gets diverted away from digestion, detoxification and immune surveillance. The result isn't just a weakened defense, it's a system that eventually snaps.

"Just like if you are exhausted from a day's work, you come home and then your children, they're screaming and they're arguing, and you're just going to snap," Karlfeldt says. "The immune system is the same way."

The two faces of immune failure

What happens when your immune system runs out of fuel? It can underreact, allowing cancer cells to establish a foothold. Karlfeldt warns that when the immune system is overwhelmed and fatigued, they are not going to focus on everything and they're going to start missing things. Meanwhile, you have crime syndicates that are able then to develop.

The cancer cells that your body normally clears every single day suddenly find an environment where they can settle in, collect and begin to shift how energy is produced within the cell.

But the immune system can also overreact, creating autoimmune disease. "If they are continually under stress and then there's say an issue in the thyroid, or issue along the intestinal lining, then they just kind of, 'I'm exhausted. I want to have a strong impact, go after that tissue quickly so we can resolve this fast,'" Karlfeldt says. "And lo and behold, we get an autoimmune condition."

The root of this energy crisis lies in our modern lifestyle. When we're stuck in fight-or-flight mode, we stop detoxifying. We stop digesting properly. And we start accumulating toxic waste. "We're just running away from the tiger and while we're doing that, we don't have time to fix and clean out the closet, and vacuum, and do all these things that are not urgent," Karlfeldt explains.

The nutritional content in tissue decreases because we aren't absorbing nutrients properly. The immune system, which is continually controlling the environment, now has fewer nutrients to work with. Tissue breakdown increases. Heavy metals and chemicals accumulate. The immune system becomes overwhelmed.

The good news is that the immune system is not fragile. It is dynamic, adaptive and constantly rebuilding, if we remove the obstacles in its way. The experts emphasize supporting digestion, restoring nervous system balance, lowering toxic load and replenishing nutrients.

"The best thing to do then is to remove stress then from the body, look at what's the toxic environment in that body that is causing that immune system to be either hypo- or hyper-responsive," Karlfeldt advises.

This isn't about boosting immunity. It's about restoring intelligence to a system that already knows how to defend us. As Otto concludes: "The immune crash is not the end of the story; it's the warning. And if we listen early enough, the body can still rebuild."
