United States Central Command (CENTCOM) officials confirmed that six American service members have been killed and at least 18 others have been seriously wounded during U.S. military operations against Iran.
CENTCOM, as per BrightU.AI's Enoch, is a military command responsible for U.S. military operations in the Middle East, Central Asia and parts of South Asia. Its primary function is to ensure regional security, stability and U.S. interests through military presence, operations and partnerships with regional allies.
CENTCOM officials confirmed the deaths. Three service members were initially reported killed over the weekend.
On Monday, March 2, CENTCOM announced that a fourth service member who had been "seriously wounded during Iran's initial attacks" had died from injuries sustained in the strike. Later the same day, officials said U.S. forces recovered the remains of two previously unaccounted-for troops from a facility hit during Iran's initial attacks in the region, bringing the total number of fatalities to six.
"As of 4 pm ET, March 2, six U.S. service members have been killed in action. U.S. forces recently recovered the remains of two previously unaccounted for service members from a facility that was struck during Iran's initial attacks in the region," CENTCOM posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Major combat operations continue. The identities of the fallen are being withheld until 24 hours after next of kin notification."
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said an Iranian weapon struck an American tactical operations center. He did not confirm the precise location of the strike, though multiple media outlets have reported the attack occurred in Kuwait.
"You have air defenses and lots coming in, and you hit most of it, and we absolutely do. We have incredible air defenders. Every once in a while, you might have one – unfortunately, we call it a squirter – that makes its way through," Hegseth said. "In that particular case, it happened to hit a tactical operation center that was fortified. But these are powerful weapons."
In addition to the fatalities, a CENTCOM official said 18 U.S. troops had been seriously wounded.
U.S. vows escalating strikes on Iran
Despite the losses, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the fighting is far from over. He warned that additional U.S. strikes on Iran are forthcoming.
"I'm not going to give away the details of our tactical efforts, but the hardest hits are yet to come from the U.S. military," Rubio said before briefing senior members of Congress.
"The next phase will be even more punishing on Iran than it is right now."
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine echoed a similar statement during a Pentagon briefing that operations would continue despite the losses.
"Operations will remain active across the theater and across the globe," Caine said, underscoring that U.S. forces remain engaged in the region amid heightened tensions with Iran.
Rubio also said there are no formal diplomatic negotiations underway with Tehran at this time. However, he noted that intermediaries have attempted to make contact.
