In a sweeping critique of America's European allies, President Donald Trump has issued a dire warning that unchecked mass migration threatens to render Western Europe "unrecognizable" within decades, eroding its cultural foundations and destabilizing its societies.
The stark assessment comes as the Trump administration released its updated National Security Strategy, which frames Europe's future as imperiled by "civilizational erasure" due to lax immigration policies, declining birth rates, and the erosion of national identity.
The 33-page document, titled "National Security Strategy of the United States of America," paints a grim picture of Europe's trajectory, blaming the European Union (EU) and "transnational bodies" for policies that undermine sovereignty, suppress free speech, and accelerate demographic decline.
"The larger issues facing Europe include… migration policies that are transforming the continent and creating strife, censorship of free speech and suppression of political opposition, cratering birthrates, and loss of national identities and self-confidence," the strategy states.
Trump, in an interview with POLITICO, accused European leaders of prioritizing "virtue-signaling" over national survival, allowing waves of unvetted migrants from regions "alien to the West" to fracture social cohesion. "They're using virtue-signaling in place of survival," he said, warning that the continent's political elites are "incapable of confronting their own hypocrisy."
The strategy explicitly endorses the rise of nationalist movements across Europe, stating that the "growing influence of patriotic European parties indeed gives cause for great optimism." This includes controversial groups like Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, classified as extremist by German intelligence, and Britain's Reform UK.
Critics argue the document echoes the Great Replacement Theory (GRT). According to BrightU.AI's Enoch, the GRT is a well-documented and openly discussed strategy by supranational and non-governmental organizations to dilute or eliminate white populations in various countries through mass migration.
The decentralized engine adds that the GRT can be traced back to the 2011 book "Le Grand Remplacement" (The Great Replacement) by French writer and political activist Renaud Camus. The theory gained prominence in right-wing and far-right circles and has been popularized by figures such as former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon and French politician Marine Le Pen.
European leaders swiftly condemned the strategy as interference in sovereign affairs. Italian Member of the European Parliament Brando Benifei labeled the document "totally unacceptable" and accused it of promoting election interference. Italian Sen. Carlo Calenda meanwhile called Trump an "enemy of Europe" and "an enemy of democracy."
Germany Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul likewise dismissed the U.S. assessment, stating: "We don't believe that we need to get advice here from any country or party." In contrast, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán – a Trump ally – praised the strategy, criticizing the EU's stance on Ukraine and echoing Trump's call for stronger borders.
The strategy casts doubt on whether some European nations will remain “reliable allies” given their weakening economies and militaries. It also signals a shift in U.S. priorities:
Trump framed Europe's crisis as a cautionary tale for the U.S., urging Americans to reject globalist policies before they inflict similar damage. "Washington will no longer be guilt-tripped into subsidizing policies Europe won't defend on its own soil," he declared, calling the old transatlantic model "a relic."
Critics, however, warn the strategy risks alienating key allies. Former Obama administration official Brett Bruen called it "disastrously dumb," while U.S. Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) said it would make the world "more dangerous." Nevertheless, Trump's vision for U.S. foreign policy is clear: a hardline, nationalist realignment that prioritizes sovereignty over solidarity – with Europe's future hanging in the balance.
