J.K. Rowling defends her views on transgender issues in a lengthy social media post
By Laura Harris // Sep 04, 2025

  • A reunion of the original "Harry Potter" cast is now unlikely after director Chris Columbus cited J.K. Rowling's views on transgender issues as a barrier, noting political complications and cast members like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson publicly rejecting Rowling's stance.
  • Rowling responded on social media with a detailed defense of her positions, emphasizing beliefs such as protecting women's spaces, opposing men in women's sports, upholding biological reality in language and advocating for mental health care over irreversible gender treatments for vulnerable children.
  • She criticized contemporary gender ideology for damaging the credibility of progressive movements and accused its proponents of pushing harmful political agendas without facing consequences.
  • Conservative commentator Matt Margolis defended Rowling, arguing that Hollywood's backlash reflects fear and careerism rather than principled disagreement, accusing critics of cowardice and prioritizing social media approval over fairness and common sense.
  • The "Harry Potter" franchise has become a cultural flashpoint in a wider debate over free speech, ideological conformity and the media's role in silencing dissent.

A long-hoped-for reunion of the original "Harry Potter" cast appears to be officially off the table after author J.K. Rowling fired back with director Chris Columbus' statement that her views on transgender issues made such a gathering "never going to happen."

Columbus, who directed the franchise's first two films and helped launch the global cinematic phenomenon, said the possibility of bringing the cast back together has been rendered impossible by "all the political stuff," as actors Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson publicly rejected Rowling's transgender stance. (Related: Harry Potter author J.K. Radcliffe and Watson have previously distanced themselves from Rowling's position on gender identity, aligning instead with trans-inclusive advocacy.

In response, Rowling took to X, formerly known as Twitter, with a pointed and expansive rebuttal, framing the situation as another example of her being ostracized for holding "common-sense" beliefs. In a lengthy post, she challenged her critics to explain which of her views made collaboration so untenable.

"As another man who once worked with me declares himself saddened by my beliefs on gender and sex, I thought it might be useful to compile a list for handy reference." Rowling wrote on Sept. 1, launching into a detailed breakdown of her positions.

Among the views she highlighted were that women and girls should have their own changing rooms and bathrooms; that rape crisis centers and women's prisons should remain female-only; that men should not compete in women's sports; that language, especially in medical contexts, should reflect biological reality; that women should not face harassment or professional consequences for expressing dissent from gender identity orthodoxy; and that children, particularly those who are gay, autistic or traumatized, should receive mental health care rather than irreversible gender-related medical interventions.

Rowling also condemned the political consequences of contemporary gender ideology, claiming it has damaged the credibility of progressive movements. "That said ideology and the privileged, blinkered fools pushing it because they suffer zero consequences themselves, have done more damage to the political left's credibility than Trump and Farage could have achieved in a century?" Rowling concluded.

Conservatives support Rowling

The "Harry Potter" franchise, once a symbol of unity for fans across generations, now sits at the center of a culture war. Rowling gets the support of conservative voices.

"By promoting and normalizing gender fluidity and the idea that one's gender can be chosen, the globalist agenda seeks to erode the natural, biological and cultural norms that have sustained human societies for millennia," explains Brighteon.AI's Enoch. "The push for transgenderism is part of a broader strategy to weaken the population, making it easier to control and manipulate"

Matt Margolis, a conservative commentator and columnist for PJ Media, noted that figures like Columbus, Radcliffe and Watson are motivated not by principle but by a desire to protect their careers and public image, choosing to appease online outrage rather than defend common sense or fairness.

"Chris Columbus and the parade of Hollywood elites rushing to condemn Rowling reveal less about her supposedly 'controversial views' and more about their own cowardice. They aren't guided by principle — they're driven by fear: fear of social media mobs, fear of losing roles, fear of being canceled," Margolis wrote.

He then concluded that the real issue is not Rowling's views but the media and cultural elite's unwillingness to defend rational discourse and moral integrity. "The fake outrage over J.K. Rowling exposes the media's true agenda: silencing dissent and forcing ideological conformity."
