While polio is really frightening, the truth is so many children have already been exposed to the polio virus without knowing it and have developed immunity in the process. Simply put, the polio vaccine is no longer needed.
The Mayo Clinic in its website stated that, "although polio can cause paralysis and death, the majority of people who are infected with the virus don't get sick and aren't aware they've been infected." It added that, "in the US, adults aren't routinely vaccinated against polio because most are already immune, and the chances of contracting polio are minimal."
This means that Americans are already immune to polio because they already contracted the virus, became immune and aren't even aware of it. But polio is still widespread in the world where sanitation of food and water is a common problem.
Bill Gates tried to do something about it. But rather than improving sanitation to prevent the route of transmission, Gates decided to deal with the virus itself. Gates started a campaign to eradicate polio from the world in 1988 and called it the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has so far pledged over $5 billion to this initiative which was supposed to eliminate polio by the year 2000. It didn't happen so he put millions of children in India on various doses of oral polio vaccine (OPV) from 2000 to 2017.
The result was disastrous. According to reports, hundreds of thousands of children became paralyzed because of vaccine-induced polio. But instead of stopping the program, Gates pledged $1.5 billion more to extend it until 2026. (Related: WHO recommends new Gates-funded polio vaccine to address vaccine-derived polio outbreak in UK.)
Polio is still around and found mostly in locations where aggressive vaccination is happening.
People have actually been warned that they will be exposed to the polio virus if they travel to nations where the OPV is used. And that is because the OPV includes the complete virus that will copy and transmit among humans.
Viruses always transmit among humans, and it is natural and cannot be prevented. Whether an individual shows symptoms or not is completely determined by the condition of their immune system.
There are four stages of polio and how far a person advances in these stages depends upon their immune system's condition.
The asymptomatic stage, which is the first stage, occurs about 70 percent of the time. People will go through this stage without even knowing it and develop natural lifelong immunity in the process.
The second stage, which is the abortive stage, happens about 24 percent of the time. This stage involves flu-like symptoms without the paralysis, and this results to natural lifelong immunity.
The third stage, which is nonparalytic, happens one to five percent of the time and the symptoms are serious, aseptic meningitis-like illness, including muscle pain and stiffness. Symptoms will last around 10 days and result in complete lifelong natural immunity.
The fourth stage is the paralytic stage, which is the rarest with less than one percent chance of happening and can lead to permanent disability. This can occur in people who are seriously immunocompromised. However, it is important to know that some these paralytic conditions are not lasting and actually fix themselves.
Same as all communicable diseases, the route of transmission is the most significant to consider.
For the polio virus, the route is either oral/oral or oral/fecal. It must be ingested, and this occurs either through saliva-to-saliva contact or by ingesting contaminated food or water.
In a natural infection, the virus particles must enter the bloodstream after being ingested. This will occur if the virus is replicated in the epithelial cells lining the gut and released into the blood or lymph.
If the virus reaches the cells of the central nervous system, the devastation of motor neurons can occur and cause soft paralysis.
