Russia: British Navy played a major role in sabotage of Nord Stream pipelines
By Arsenio Toledo // Nov 01, 2022

Russia has directly accused the United Kingdom of playing a major role in the sabotage incident that resulted in the destruction of parts of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 natural gas pipelines in September.

The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines carry Russian natural gas 760 miles under the Baltic Sea to Germany. The two pipelines have an annual maximum capacity of around 110 billion cubic meters of gas, which accounts for more than 50 percent of Russia's normal natural gas export volumes. (Related: Report: Hundreds of kilos worth of "highly effective explosive devices" responsible for Nord Stream pipeline sabotage.)

On Sept. 26, analysts registered a sharp drop in pressure on both pipelines. Seismologists later detected explosions. Scientists from both Sweden and Denmark concluded that four leaks on the two pipelines were caused by explosions, but have not said who might be responsible.

The Kremlin has blamed the West for the sabotage, but up until now have refused to directly blame one or several nations for the attack.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, a spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that specialists from the British Royal Navy orchestrated the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines.

"According to available information, representatives of this unit of the British Navy took part in the planning, provisioning and implementation of a terrorist attack in the Baltic Sea on Sept. 26 this year, blowing up the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines," said the spokesperson.

Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Moscow will seek a reaction from the United Nations Security Council following the Kremlin's allegations against Britain. She said in a post on social media that Russia wants to draw attention to "a series of terrorist attacks committed against the Russian Federation in the Black and Baltic Seas, including the involvement of Britain in them."

The Russian Defense Ministry further alleged that "British specialists" have been aiding Ukraine in its drone attacks on ships belonging to Russia's Black Sea fleet in Crimea.

Britain, West deny Russia's accusations

The British Ministry of Defense has denied Kremlin's claims.

"To detract from their disastrous handling of the illegal invasion of Ukraine, the Russian Ministry of Defense is resorting to peddling false claims of an epic scale," said the ministry in a statement. "This invented story says more about arguments going on inside the Russian government than it does about the West."

The Kremlin has also previously blamed the United States, claiming Washington stands to benefit the most from the Nord Stream pipelines being sabotaged, as it allows America to sell more liquefied natural gas to Europe. The White House also denied this claim.

Britain, the U.S. and their allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have for weeks insinuated that Russia sabotaged its own pipelines in a false flag attack. The incident has even been used to further ramp up hostilities between NATO and Russia in Ukraine.

But, as Baxter Dmitry of NewsPunch pointed out, Russia does not stand to gain anything from sabotaging its own pipelines.

Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom owns both pipelines, which are responsible for providing power and heat to thousands of homes and businesses in Europe. The pipelines bring in billions of dollars of vital cash to Russia's economy. Preventing Gazprom from fulfilling its contracts with European partners does not provide Russia with any kind of benefit.

"From the standpoint of who benefits, the accusation that Britain is responsible or played a critical role in the bombing of Nord Stream is far more credible than claims of Russia rendering inoperable tens of billions of dollars worth of key infrastructure it has been developing over almost three decades since 1997," wrote Dmitry.
