According to its website, the BBCH – named after former First Lady Barbara Bush – "is dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of transgender, gender diverse and questioning youth across Northern New England." The hospital offers treatment to children and their families from childhood through adolescence and young adulthood, i.e. age 26.
Other services offered by the BBCH include "menstrual suppression" to stop unwanted periods and "puberty blockers" to stop the development of puberty hormones. "Gender-affirming hormone therapy" such as estrogen for boys and testosterone for girls are also available. Moreover, the hospital also offers "surgical consultation" – including "mental health letters or referrals" – for gender-confused children. For those who do not want to go under the knife, BBCH also offers guides for children on how to bind their breasts and tuck their genitals.
BBCH pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Jerrold Olshan said in a video that transgender children are "probably genetically programmed" to act in a manner opposite to their biological sex. He remarked: "Our big goal is how do we help this population do better in the long run?"
The Maine-based BBMC is not the only medical facility offering gender-affirming medical interventions to transgender children. Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) in Tennessee also offers the same services, but took down its website about these treatments.
Matt Walsh of the Daily Wire outlined his bombshell findings about the medical facility in a lengthy Sept. 20 Twitter thread.
"My team and I have been investigating the transgender clinic at [VUMC] here in Nashville,” he wrote. "[VUMC] drugs, chemically castrates and performs double mastectomies on minors. But it gets worse."
He cited a 2020 video from VUMC’s YouTube channel, wherein the hospital admitted to giving irreversible hormone drugs to children as young as 13. "After they have drugged and sterilized the kids, [the hospital] … will happily perform double mastectomies on adolescent girls," he wrote.
Walsh also zeroed in on the "Trans Buddies" program, which VUMC offered alongside "gender-affirming hormone therapy" and "pubertal blocking."
According to the journalist, the program involves transgender activists from the Nashville community. These activists attend appointments with trans patients, monitoring the doctors to guard against "unsafe" behaviors such as "misgendering."
Moreover, the Daily Wire journalist posted videos of the Tennessee hospital's doctors espousing such procedures.
He posted footage of VUMC’s Dr. Shane Taylor during a 2018 lecture where she bragged about convincing the hospital to offer gender transition procedures. According to Taylor, such procedures were "big money makers" mainly because the surgeries require a lot of "follow-ups." VUMC began offering gender-related procedures when it opened in 2018, the same year as Taylor’s lecture.
A second footage, this time from another VUMC doctor, showed apparent threats against medical professionals who had objections about the procedures – religious or otherwise.
“If you are going to assert conscientious objection, you have to realize that this is problematic. You are doing something to another person, and you are not paying the cost for your belief. I think that is a real issue. I just want you to take home that saying that you’re not going to do something because of your religious beliefs – [it’s] not without consequences and should not be without consequences. I just want to put that out there,” remarked the hospital's Dr. Ellen Clayton.
