NZ coroner: Myocarditis caused by Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine behind the death of 26-year-old plumber
By Ramon Tomey // Sep 22, 2022

A coroner in New Zealand ruled that myocarditis caused by Pfizer's mRNA Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine led to the death of a plumber there.

Coroner Sue Johnson released the findings of a six-day inquest over the death of plumber Rory Nairn, 26, on Sept. 20. He died on Nov. 17, 2021 – just 12 days after getting vaccinated with the Pfizer mRNA vaccine.

"The cause of his death was myocarditis due to vaccination with the Comirnaty Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine," she said. Johnson cited the expert findings by pathologist Noelyn Hung, who attributed Nairn's death to acute myocarditis or inflammation of the heart muscle.

According to the coroner, Hung saw that the myocarditis "was not caused by [Nairn] having rheumatic fever or by infection as there was no sign of a bacteria, virus or fungi." The pathologist "also excluded all other known potential causes of myocarditis – for example, certain medicines such as the anti-psychotic medications clozapine and risperidone."

Johnson accepted Hung's medical opinion that the COVID-19 shot caused Nairn's myocarditis, given that any other causes were ruled out following numerous tests.

On the night of Nov. 5 – the day Nairn was injected with the vaccine – he reported his chest "feeling weird" and having heart flutters in the days that followed. But the plumber dismissed the signs as simply caused by the stress of his forthcoming wedding and the purchase of a new home.

Twelve days later, on the evening of Nov. 17, he collapsed in the bathroom soon after planning to go to a hospital. Emergency services were called, be he could not be revived.

Ashleigh Wilson, Nairn's partner, revealed during the inquest that he was initially hesitant about getting the vaccine. However, the draconian COVID-19 mandates put in place by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern became a cause of concern for him.

She also found a screenshot of a website detailing the risk of post-vaccination myocarditis on her partner's phone after he died. The screenshot was taken hours before his passing, according to Wilson. (Related: Pfizer vaccine linked to heart inflammation in young men, Israeli experts conclude.)

Nairn was not warned about the risk of myocarditis

Representatives of the drug store where Nairn was vaccinated, including its owner and the pharmacist who injected him, testified during the inquest – albeit under anonymity.

During the period when the plumber got his first Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine dose, it was not standard practice for vaccinators at the drug store to warn patients about the risks of post-vaccination myocarditis.

The pharmacist who gave Nairn the lethal shot said these practices changed immediately after his death.

"As soon as we were notified, all practices were changed. We were informing everyone that you must go to the doctor or the hospital as soon as anything happens, regardless of if you've had a vaccine or not," she testified while holding back tears. "It's just unfortunate that [he] had to pass away for that to happen."

Meanwhile, the drug store owner pointed her finger at the New Zealand Ministry of Health for putting myocarditis warnings in small bullet points. It issued a warning to medical professionals in August 2021 about the risks of myocarditis and pericarditis (heart lining inflammation), after a woman died of the former.

The owner admitted missing the warning about cardiac inflammation due to the sheer volume of information they received. She added that had she known about the warning sooner, she would have told staff to warn patients about the risk of vaccine-induced myocarditis.

Wilson remarked at the inquest that if the myocarditis warning came in sooner, it might have saved Nairn's life. She ultimately condemned her late partner's decision to get the COVID-19 vaccine as the "worst decision of [their] lives."
