A group of 54 Republican congressmen in the House of Representatives called on President Joe Biden to "immediately" take a cognitive test.

The GOP lawmakers issued their challenge in a July 27 letter addressed to Biden himself, White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Kevin O'Connor, physician to the president. The representatives cited various lapses that have appeared repeatedly in the president's behavior as strong reasons for him to take the test.

The letter was the third such correspondence sent to Biden regarding his mental function. Two prior letters were sent to him in June 2021 and February 2022.

Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson, who served as presidential physician during the Obama and Trump administrations, spearheaded the groups of 54 congressmen who signed the letter. The June 2021 letter only had 13 signatories, while the February 2022 letter had 37 signatories.

"We are worried about your mental abilities," wrote Jackson and his colleagues. "With your current cognitive state … [we] urge you to submit to a cognitive test immediately. We believe that regardless of gender, age or political party, all presidents should follow the example set by former President [Donald] Trump to document and demonstrate sound mental abilities."

The Texas congressman pointed out that while the 79-year-old Biden underwent a physical exam on Nov. 19, 2021, he either "did not face a cognitive test or those results were withheld from the public." O'Connor's declaration that Biden was "fit to successfully execute the duties of the presidency" was "very superficial and purely physical," Jackson added. "The American people should have absolute confidence in their president, knowing that [they] can perform their duties as head of state and commander in chief. [Americans] deserve full transparency on the mental capabilities of their highest elected leader."

The GOP legislators also called on Biden to "publish the results of this [cognitive] test after its conclusion, so the American people may be informed on [his] full cognitive capabilities."

Sentiment regarding Biden's cognitive decline is growing

The letter also pointed out that sentiment regarding Biden's worsening cognitive decline is growing from both sides of the political spectrum. It cited the results of a recent poll showing more than half of respondents doubting the president's capability to fulfill the duties of the chief executive.

"Sixty-six percent of voters believe that you should take a cognitive test, [and] 56 percent of voters are not confident that you are physically and mentally fit for your duties as president. Sixty-four percent of voters believe you have shown signs that you are too old to execute the duties of the president of the U.S., [while] only 33 percent of voters approve of the job that you have done."

"The increased scrutiny surrounding your cognitive state has been fueled by your recent public appearances, during which you shuffle your feet when you walk, often slur your words, lose your train of thought, have trouble summoning names and appear momentarily confused," the July 27 letter stated.

Moreover, it also cited Biden's bigger gaffes during overseas engagements – with some requiring clarifications from White House staff. Such gaffes, the letter argued, "are extremely concerning and cast doubt upon your ability to handle the duties required of the [presidency], which poses a very serious national security risk."

"These recent gaffes are not isolated incidents, as they are part of a larger history of your actions which exemplify cognitive decline."

The GOP lawmakers concluded that the chief executive's cognitive decline is "not a partisan issue," quoting their colleague Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) who spoke about the issue.

"It's not hard to think that there will be future situations where the president's physical and mental state may create issues for us," the Democratic lawmaker said in relation to many politicians reaching advanced age.
