Former FTM transgender teen supports Florida ban on using Medicaid funds for transgender medical interventions
By Ramon Tomey // Jul 12, 2022

A former female-to-male (FTM) transgender teen expressed support of Florida's ban on the use of Medicaid funds for transgender-related medical interventions, such as puberty blockers and gender reassignment surgeries.

Chloe Cole, 17, revealed during a July 8 public hearing that she received such treatments for gender dysphoria from ages 13 to 16. The teenager from California took puberty-blocking drugs and testosterone and underwent a mastectomy at age 15, before de-transitioning a year later at age 16.

"I really didn't understand all of the ramifications of any of the medical decisions that I was making," she admitted. "I was unknowingly physically cutting off my true self from my body, irreversibly and painfully."

In line with this, Cole spoke in favor of the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration's (AHCA) Rule 59G-1.050. The new order excluded puberty blockers, hormones and hormone antagonists, sex reassignment surgeries, or "any other procedures that alter primary or secondary sexual characteristics" to treat gender dysphoria from being covered by Florida Medicaid.

She reiterated her support for the rule during a separate private meeting with Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo on the same day.

"I don't know if I'll be able to fully carry a child, and I might be at increased risk for certain cancers, mainly cervical cancer. And because I do not have my breasts, I am not able to breastfeed whatever future children I have," Cole told the Sunshine State's top health official. She added that those realizations made her reflect that transitioning was not the path she should have taken."

The teen exhorted the public not to transition their kids, adding: "If you are considering transitioning, please wait until you are a fully developed adult. Transitioning can damage your body and mind in ways that we may not fully understand." (Related: British whistleblowers reveal horrors that come following trans surgeries.)

"No child should have to experience what I have," concluded Cole.

The surgeon general himself also urged parents who plan to seek medical intervention for their children with gender dysphoria against such procedures.

"Medicalization of minors with gender dysphoria might advance the political views of physicians involved in their care, but the data showing any benefits for the actual children is extraordinarily thin," said Ladapo.

According to the health official, the so-called gender-affirmative model "runs an unacceptably high risk of harm." He added: "Parents are threatened with fears of suicide, but the treatments have not been shown to actually reduce this risk. These patients need compassionate care of their emotional and mental well-being, not to be in embroiled in political views about sex [or] gender."

Ladapo's remarks mirrored that of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who said back in May that he plans to ban gender transition surgeries for children in the Sunshine State.

"You can’t get a tattoo if you're 12 years old. When they say 'gender-affirming care,' what they mean a lot of times is you are really castrating a young boy, sterilizing a young girl [and] doing mastectomies for these very young girls," the Republican governor told Fox News host Lisa Boothe.

"You're doing things that are permanently altering them, and then they're not [going to] be able to reverse that. So I don't think it's appropriate for kids at all."

Brock Juarez, the AHCA's communications director, dubbed Cole's testimony as "very thought-provoking." He also cited a recent report by the agency, which found that several services for treating gender dysphoria "are not consistent with widely accepted professional medical standards and are experimental and investigational with the potential for harmful long term effects."

Pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Matthew Benson also expressed agreement with the AHCA's order. "I think the data on which the gender-affirmative model is based [on] is not scientific," he said.

"We need better data, we need long-term perspective trials where we can look at adverse effects. We need much more robust data to justify these kinds of very robust therapies," added the Jacksonville-based child physician, citing studies from Sweden and Denmark that showed extremely high rates of suicide among people who received transgender interventions.
