An award-winning filmmaker and founder of Hearthstone Network, Hicks loves to tell true stories of ordinary people living extraordinary lives after they partnered with God. This time, she created a series called "I Am Not Ashamed: The Making of a Warrior" – which is about Murillo's life.
Hicks described Murillo as an evangelist focused on his God-given assignment to raise an army of God to reclaim America. She added that Murillo sees amazing things happening in his tent revivals across the country.
The author and motivational speaker shared that she had an opportunity to sit down with Murillo and listen to his story from the beginning – how he came to know the Lord, how he learned to hear from the Lord and the fascinating stories that he had along the way.
Hicks put them together to make a series and shared some of its episodes during the "America Unhinged" show.
"He is truly an incredible man and I will tell you he is a 'what you see is what you get' kind of guy. His stories are fascinating. I could hear them over and over," Hicks said about Murillo, whose international ministry was launched after a supposedly four-day conference in San Jose, California was extended to six months with nearly 250,000 people attending.
In the first episode entitled "Recruited by God," Murillo talked about his conversion to Christ in 1964 at the Bay Area of San Francisco, which he said was the ground zero of three major revolutions that were going on at one time.
Murillo said he was in turmoil at that time with the Vietnam War hanging over Americans' heads and the most chilling thing was being drafted. He added that America was totally racially divided, with the anxiety very great and the racial tension rising. Major riots and demonstrations based on race and politics were also happening in the country.
He was going to school one day when he met a blond-haired, blue-eyed Norwegian who walked up to him and invited him to come to their church. He first attended service at the Free Methodist Church on October 4, 1964.
Murillo mentioned that a team from Teen Challenge New York was brought to the church at the time and the young men talked about how they had all gotten off of heroin by the power of God. The future evangelist said he was wrapping his mind around it when the Spirit of God began to work on him.
Murillo said the first thing he heard was God's calling for him to preach the gospel and become a true Christian. He added that he was struggling at first before being intensely overcome to bursting into the front.
"And that's when I was converted. And it was instant, it was revolutionary. It was complete," Murillo said.
The first episode ended with Murillo saying that the Christian Church has lost the voice of America. He challenged Christian believers to be ready to end America's miserable record.
In episode two entitled "A Jedi To The Rescue," Murillo shared the attempts made on his life after seeing a group of young men taking heroin. He said that he had to yell the one Bible verse he had memorized, which was 1 John 4:4, before opening his eyes to see that they had dispersed in different directions.
He also talked about a black Christian high school student named Larry Cobb, who became his friend and mentor on discipleship, witnessing and prayer.
Murillo also talked about the prayer meetings he had with Cobb at the Double Rock Baptist Church in Hunters Point every Friday night. He added that he had to learn how to wait on the Lord and that his initiation to prayer was praying all night.
Within two weeks of his conversion, Murillo was able to lead 14 of his friends to Christ. He also mentioned the persecution they had to face because of the activism going on with the Black Panthers. (Related: Christianity is increasingly coming under attack around the world.)
