The archbishop of the Archdiocese of San Francisco banned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) from receiving Holy Communion for supporting abortion.

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone announced Pelosi's prohibition on May 20. "After numerous attempts to speak with Pelosi to help her understand the grave evil she is perpetrating, the scandal she is causing and the danger to her own soul she is risking – I have determined that she is not to be admitted to Holy Communion," he tweeted that day.

The tweet followed an earlier letter the archbishop sent to the No. 3 politician in the land in April. The April 7 letter sternly admonished Pelosi, informing her that she should not present herself for Holy Communion at Masses. It added that priests in the diocese will not distribute communion to her in case she presents herself.

"A 'Catholic' legislator who supports procured abortion, after knowing the teaching of the [Catholic] Church, commits a manifestly grave sin – which is a cause of most serious scandal to others. Therefore, universal Church law provides that such persons 'are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.'"

"Should you not publicly repudiate your advocacy for abortion 'rights' or else refrain from referring to your Catholic faith in public and receiving Holy Communion, I would have no choice but to make a declaration, in keeping with Canon 915, that you are not to be admitted to Holy Communion."

According to Cordileone, Pelosi has not repudiated her support of abortion – leading him to ban the House Speaker from receiving Holy Communion. (Related: PLANNED ABORTION-HOOD? Pelosi claiming to be a "devout" Catholic while espousing abortion is utter hypocrisy

Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, has presented herself as a "devout" Catholic despite supporting abortion. However, her espousal of abortion has triggered several brushes with the Catholic Church over the years as the latter condemns it as a moral evil.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "since the first century, the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. That teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable." It added that "direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: [As such,] abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes."

Remarking on the San Francisco archbishop's admonishments, Pelosi said: "This really gets me burned up in case you didn't notice, because again I'm very Catholic. Devout, practicing, all of that. They would like to throw me out. But I'm not going because I don't want to make their day."

Fr. Thomas Rausch SJ, professor emeritus at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, pointed that Cordileone's edict only applies to the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Pelosi would still be able to receive Holy Communion in other dioceses, he added.

The Jesuit Rausch, however, remarked that the archbishop's actions "reflect the division in the American Catholic hierarchy." He explained: "We have some bishops who insist on making abortion the preeminent moral issue faced by the church, and we have others who are personally against abortion but do not want to politicize the Eucharist."

Brian Burch, president of advocacy group CatholicVote, said following Cordileone's announcement: "For too long, Catholic public officials have created confusion and disunity by advocating for policies that destroy innocent human life – in direct contradiction of the teachings of the Catholic faith. The persistent disobedience of these public officials is a source of enormous sadness and scandal that begged for a response."

Even though the San Francisco archbishop prohibited Pelosi from receiving Holy Communion, he still exhorted the faithful to "pray and fast" for her.
