Fauci to get largest retirement package in federal government history
By Mary Villareal // Jan 04, 2022

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Anthony Fauci is set to receive the largest retirement package in federal government history. After working for the government for 55 years, he will be walking away with up to $350,000 per year. This amount does not include the annual cost-of-living increases to his pension and benefits.

Fauci, who was paid $434,312 in 2020, is already the highest-compensated federal employee. Also the White House chief medical advisor, Fauci was given a huge salary boost during the George W. Bush administration for his biodefense work. He went on from making a $200,000 salary in 2004 to $335,000 in 2007. Today, he out-earns President Joe Biden, who earns $400,000 annually.

Federal employees who worked as long as Fauci can earn up to 80 percent of their high-3 average salary plus credit for sick leave when they retire.

Calculating Fauci’s benefits

Fauci’s 2021 salary is yet to be published, but media companies have already filed a Freedom of Information Act request in November to gain access to the information. The last three available years of his salary (he made $399,625 in 2019) were used to calculate his potential retirement benefits.

Forbes estimated that if he had left federal service at the end of FY2020, Fauci would have received a federal pension of $333,745 a year, plus cost-of-living increases.

Moreover, Fauci is also likely to be eligible to receive an annuity of payment for federal employees who served more than 10 years, giving him an additional $8,344 per year. The Forbes report noted that Fauci’s 2021 and 2022 salaries will likely be the same or even higher than his 2020 salary, which could boost his base retirement pay to around $347,500 a year.

Fauci said that he has no plans of retiring before getting the pandemic under control. He told ABC News anchor Jonathan Karl on the December 19 episode of “This Week” that it’s the purpose of what he’s supposed to be doing, and he is not going to walk away in the middle of it.

He stressed that he has to finish the pandemic and have lives return to normal.

Fauci won the trust of Democrats after his appointment as point person on the White House coronavirus response team under former President Donald Trump. In the early days of the pandemic, he was often praised for rebuking Trump in terms of the COVID response.

However, Republicans have called for Fauci to be fired and slammed the doctor for giving the gain-of-function grant to the Wuhan lab, which led to the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

In response to the global pandemic, Fauci preached mask-wearing and vaccination, including boosters, against the coronavirus. Because of these measures, Fauci became one of the most controversial political figures in the country, drawing the ire of conservatives who accused him of being inconsistent in his positions. Senator Rand Paul blamed Fauci for thousands of COVID deaths, saying that he is “biased” in his push for the vaccines while ignoring proven therapeutics. Paul also claimed thousands died because Fauci refused to take into account the importance of natural immunity, and instead prioritized the vaccinations.
