New Zealand urges schools to call police if unvaccinated staff show up
By Ramon Tomey // Nov 18, 2021

Authorities in New Zealand instructed school authorities to call law enforcement if unvaccinated staff report for work. School employees who do not get injected with the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine by Nov. 15 will be fined, they added.

The New Zealand Ministry of Education released the guidance on Nov. 11, according to a report by the Daily Mail. It informed school leaders that if they or other staff members show up on school premises without being injected, they would be committing an offense.

As per the ministry, school teachers and early learning staff members must have their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by Nov. 15. Only those who have been injected by that date could work onsite with students, it added.

"The [erring] staff member will be committing an infringement offense if they have not had their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and are onsite [on] Nov. 15. This means [that] they may be liable for a fine," the Nov. 11 advice stated. It comes after the New Zealand government's "no jab, no job" policy enacted in October 2021.

The ministry advised schools: "If staff [members] do turn up on site after this date, we encourage school leaders to deal with this in the usual manner you would if other inappropriate people were to turn up on site. If you feel your safety, or the safety of … pupils or students, or other staff [members are] compromised, you should consider contacting the police."

Furthermore, the ministry noted that unvaccinated school staffers can no longer work in educational premises without a valid medical exemption. A written letter from a physician stating that such a request has been sought would also suffice. The announcement initially caused confusion among a number of educators, who initially thought they could still work on-site until Jan. 1, 2022 without being vaccination. Later clarification revealed that the Jan. 1 date was the deadline for their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Draconian measures part of New Zealand's "zero COVID" strategy

New Zealand is no stranger to draconian COVID-19 measures. It gained the world's attention during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic for its "zero COVID" strategy that kept its case counts low. However, the strategy came at a cost of restricting people's freedom – through hard lockdowns over huge areas of New Zealand. The country's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called on people back in the summer to avoid talking to their neighbors. "Stay local and do not congregate, don't talk to your neighbors [and] please keep to your bubbles," she said at the time.

In August 2021, Ardern put the entirety of New Zealand under a strict lockdown following a single COVID-19 infection. The city of Auckland, where the infected person lives, and the town of Coromandel, where the infected person visited, went into a seven-day full lockdown. The rest of the country also went into a three-day lockdown.

Ardern urged New Zealand's population of five million to do their part in eliminating the latest outbreak. "We have seen what happens elsewhere if we fail to get on top of it. We only get one chance," she warned.

Prior to the August lockdown, New Zealand had managed to achieve zero COVID – with its last outbreak happening in February. However, the prime minister warned that the more contagious B16172 delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 would likely require more drastic actions than earlier strains.

Ardern eased coronavirus restrictions in Auckland on Sept. 20, ending almost five weeks of the city's stringent lockdown. However, she reiterated that the relaxing of restrictions in Auckland ought to be considered a "cautious step."

"We keep doing the job of stamping out COVID, [but] we are not stepping out … because the job is done. Nor are we moving because we don't think we can achieve the goal of stamping out COVID-19," she said.
