If you made the latter choice, you would, of course, be correct.
According to a new report from the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence — named after former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.), who was shot and nearly killed in January 2011 by a Leftist named Jared Loughner — the alleged cost of ‘gun violence’ in South Carolina between 2010 and 2014 was about $293 million per year, supposedly the second-highest amount in the country, the center claimed.
In all, the report notes, using figures provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “South Carolina had an annual average of 309 gun-related homicides, 495 gun-related suicides and ‘thousands’ of nonfatal shootings” during the period.
In addition, the center said gun homicides in the state rose 25 percent between 2014 and 2017.
The overall cost to state taxpayers, the center says, is $1.5 billion per year, or about $915 per person, though there is no way each person pays that much because of the way taxes, fees, medical costs and other expenses are unevenly divided.
“People don’t think about gun violence in a way that would impact them on a day-to-day basis, unless, of course, they are more involved or someone who has been a victim,” Robin Lloyd, managing director of Giffords, the larger advocacy group that includes the Giffords Law Center, told McClatchy Papers — the same media organization that kept publishing one fake news story after another regarding the “Russian collusion” hoax, earning it a $150 million libel lawsuit from House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes (R-Calif.).
“Somebody gave them the phony information that the National Rifle Association was involved with Russia collusion, somebody gave them the phony information that [former Trump lawyer Michael] Cohen was in Prague when he wasn’t, somebody gave them phony information about me that they ran over and over again across all of their platforms and digitally accusing me of federal crimes. That’s not OK,” Nunes said in April, when the suit was filed.
As for the South Carolina report, it’s clear that McClatchy is all-in on it, describing it as “sobering” — meaning, the paper is simply accepting the Giffords Center’s findings despite knowing that the organization is anti-gun.
As for the ‘costs’ to the state, researchers included some dubious sources like…incarceration costs.
For example, the center claims that the $1.5 billion per annum in costs includes lost income “a gunshot victim or incarcerated perpetrator could have earned had they not been killed, forced to stop working because of a serious injury or incarceration.”
That implies that South Carolinians could save money if they simply did not lock up perpetrators of armed criminal actions. That’s goofy. (Related: Dems introduce “Disarm Hate Act” they would use to take guns away from ALL Trump supporters.)
The study also said that state taxpayers have to dole out $120 million per year in “law enforcement and criminal justice expenses” — but these line items would be paid for anyway whether police and prosecutors were working on gun-related crime or something else.
Not only that, but the state isn’t likely to adopt any of the recommendations:
— More background checks;
— A ‘red flag’ law that gives a judge authority to take a gun away from someone without due process;
— Implementing “evidence-based violence intervention strategies” — something police in the state already do, no doubt.
Like we said…more gun control in the same vein as before. Just another Left-wing group that hates the Second Amendment (and liberty in general) being pushed by another Left-wing “mainstream” media fake news operation. Nothing new here.
