In his classic “1984,” Orwell wrote a “fictional” account of a future totalitarian, all-powerful government that spies on everyone using all manner of technology while controlling what people can know via massive media propaganda.
So powerful was government that citizens could be in jeopardy for saying the wrong things or even having the wrong look on their face, a phenomenon Orwell called “Facecrime.”
While not punishable legally — yet — it is certainly an offense which the American Left now considers legitimate. That is, of course, if the Facecrime is being committed by the ‘wrong’ person, and by wrong, we mean someone who supports a non-Leftist political view. (Related: The American Left doesn’t just hate conservatives, they want to exterminate us.)
Case in point: The teen boys from Covington Catholic High School, who were in Washington, D.C. earlier this month to participate in the annual March For Life event.
At one point while the teens — many wearing “MAGA” hats — were waiting for a bus to pick them up and return them to their hotel, Native American activist, Nathan Phillips, approached, walking up to one teen, and began banging a drum in his face. The boy stood his ground — he had a constitutional right to be in the same place at the same time as Phillips, after all — and merely smiled at his tormentor. He never said anything and never moved to physically interdict Phillips.
But his smile was zeroed in on by triggered Leftists who accused the minor teen of mocking someone who actually initiated the confrontation. A Facecrime, or more correctly, a HATcrime, had been committed, you see, and as such, the teen must be punished. And so he was — by the media, Hollywood, and even by Catholic officials from his school and diocese in Kentucky.
In a country where our founding document is supposed to protect free expression and speech, this kind of demonization by any political faction is completely unacceptable.
