Walking sticks and canes

These walking aids are among the oldest self-defense weapons known to man, dating back to thousands of years ago. They can be deadly weapons in the hands of an experienced fighter. Walking sticks made from blackthorn wood are incredibly durable and can last for generations when properly taken care of. Some canes made out of hardwood only grow harder with age.

Knives

In theory, you can use any sharp, bladed object to defend yourself. These can include all manner of bladed weapons you can use with one hand, such as switchblades, butterfly knives, pocket knives, daggers, and throwing knives. Less combat-oriented options are X-Acto blades and cutting tools, scalpels, straight razors, and kitchen knives.

Coffee pot

A hot pot of coffee can be real wake-up call to your attacker when you smash it against their face. You can use it as a blunt weapon, even without coffee inside. If the pot shatters on impact, it can leave shards of glass embedded in your attackers' skin. You can even throw your coffee mug at them for good measure.

Fire extinguishers

Fire extinguishers can do more than fight fires. They can fight off assailants well. Fire extinguishers make great non-lethal weapons in a pinch. Just aim the nozzle at your attacker and spray them with foam. Once they are distracted, use the extinguisher's canister as a blunt weapon to knock them out. It is useful to familiarize yourself with how to operate a fire extinguisher, so that you can be ready to use it at a moment's notice.

Baseball bats

It doesn't take a lot of imagination in order to use a baseball bat as a blunt weapon. Aluminum or wooden baseball bats can be used to strike lethal blows. Even a child's baseball bat can do some serious damage. (Related: 5 Everyday items you can use to protect yourself in a dangerous situation.)

Gardening tools

Your green thumb could belong to a warrior's hand if you know how to defend yourself with common gardening tools. Some tools that make excellent defensive weapons due to their long reach include pitch forks, gardening hoes, lawn rakes, sickles, and shovels. Keep the edges of these tools sharp, so that they can be used to stab an attacker. If the edges are blunt, you can still swing their weighted front ends to deal blunt force trauma. For close combat, you can defend yourself using hand shovels, hand rakes and wooden gardening stakes. Gardening tools with wooden handles tend to be more durable than fiberglass ones. Use clamps and wraps around the handles to support the wood and reduce the risk of your handle splitting.

Pens

Hold a pen in an overhand grip and use it to stab at vulnerable parts of your assailant's body, such as their face and throat. They might not be able to inflict deep wounds, but Tactical pens can give you an even greater advantage than regular ballpoint pens.

Horseshoes

Horseshoes are commonly used in a popular sporting game, wherein they are thrown at a metal stake. Some people even use these items as lucky charms. They can bring you more than luck if you can throw them properly at your attacker. When thrown at a close distance, they can critically injure a person.
