In a piece for National Review titled, “America’s Next Civil War Will Be Worse Than Our Last,” historian H.W. Crocker III wrote that despite fundamental disagreements over slavery and the presumed right of secession, North and South during the first Civil War was truly fought by Americans who shared many similarities:
North and South venerated the Founders. They shared the same language, the same religion, and, in large part, the same general stock. Most of all, they shared what Jeff Sessions was recently rebuked for calling an “Anglo-American heritage” of liberty under law, stretching from the mists of medieval England — even before Magna Carta — to our own Bill of Rights.
Writing further, Crocker observed that divisions between Left and Right are so profound that “Americans cannot even agree on what marriage is or what a man or a woman is which is pretty darn fundamental."
This was all demonstrated recently during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on family detention centers for illegal aliens managed by the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. As The Gateway Pundit reported, Democrats have been upset in recent weeks by the Trump administration’s deterrent practice – now halted – of separating adults and their minor children when they were caught sneaking into the country.
Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, “played the fool” at the hearing, TGP’s Jim Hoft wrote. She appeared to not understand why illegal immigrants are illegal in the first place and seemed to think that POTUS Donald Trump is personally responsible for declaring illegal border jumping to be…illegal.
During questioning, ICE Executive Associate Director Matthew Albence was forced to explain to her why illegal aliens are deemed so. He noted that they were being kept in detention centers “because they broke the law.”
“They broke a law only deemed so by the president with his…” she began to say before Albence interrupted with some truth bombs.
“No ma’am, they're for violation of Title 8 of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act. Okay, U.S. 13:25. Illegal entry is both a criminal and a civil violation. They are in those FRCs pending the outcome of that civil immigration process. They have broken the law.”
Frankly, as a sitting senator involved in a serious matter, she should have come to the hearing far more prepared. That she didn’t is a disgrace, but on her, not on our system.
“Well, these are mainly… My understanding is that under zero tolerance [the Trump administration’s position that all illegal crossings should be prosecuted] these are no longer civil proceedings but in fact criminal proceedings,” Hirono said.
Albence responded that yes, they are “criminal proceedings” when Border Patrol prosecuted them. “But at the conclusion of that process, once the individual came into ICE custody they would go through administrative proceedings,” he added. That “confused” her.
Conservative firebrand, author, commentator, and lawyer Ann Coulter noted the exchange in a tweet.
“Witness at ICE hearing patiently explains to Sen. Mazie Hirono that illegal aliens are illegal because of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Act, not Trump. Sen. Hirono: “I’m confused.” No kidding,” she wrote.

She followed that up with: “A U.S. senator, @mazihirono of Hawaii, just announced at the ICE hearing that THE ONLY REASON it’s illegal for anyone to waltz into our country is bc of Trump!”

Hirono’s refusal to acknowledge that illegal immigrants have broken our laws goes a long way toward explaining why, thanks to Democrats and their supporters, the country cannot even come together to define a common security objective and then collectively defend it.
All of which makes division – and civil conflict – even more likely.
