Of course, for voicing my opinion I was lambasted as “anti-LGBTQ” (which I am not). I countered that my concern centered mostly around my life experience-informed belief that someone would abuse the store’s progressive policy and harm or potentially harm an unsuspecting child.
Turns out I and the tens of millions of other Americans who had similar concerns have now been proven right.
As reported by CBN News, police near Chicago are looking for a man — a perverted man, actually — who exposed himself to a young girl in a Target women’s restroom in recent days, which has prompted many to blame the retailer’s gender-neutral bathroom policies.
Local reports noted that a mother went into the restroom with her young daughter, but soon afterward a man entered and claimed he had to go. Police say he then forced himself into a stall where the young girl was, exposed himself, then quickly left the store.
“It’s very sad. Children are innocent,” said Stanley Hughley, a shopper, in an interview with NBC Chicago. “However old the pedophile was, it’s wrong. It’s pure evil no matter how you look at it.”
Of course it is. It was also predictable. (Related: Target sells sex toys near children's toothbrushes to promote sex-obsessed pop culture.)
Target spokesperson Danielle Schumann said the perv was drunk when he went into the bathroom — which is no excuse, of course — and tried to assure customers that the retailer is concerned about the safety of customers — which of course, it isn’t, as evidenced by the gender-neutral policy.
“At Target, the safety and security of our guests is critically important to us,” she said. “Immediately after a guest notified us of this incident, we called law enforcement and provided them with video footage from our store entrance to help with their investigation.”
Because as is the case in shooting incidents, when seconds count the police are always minutes away. It’s not their fault, mind you; there are only so many officers and so much criminal activity to combat. But if Target really cared about “guest” safety (hey Target, you’re a retailer, not a hotel, so we’re customers), they’d have someone on duty in the bathrooms to guard against this eventuality.
And boy, what a job that would be, right? Imagine working for the retailer and going in one day to find that you’d been placed on “bathroom guard duty” for your shift.
No, a better thing to do would be to dump the policy change, implemented in 2016 to accommodate the .0001 percent of the population that can’t figure out which gender they are or want to be, and be done with it. Let men and women who know what sex they are use the bathroom appropriate to their sex.
The Rev. Franklin Graham spoke for the majority of Americans who find such policies foolish — and harmful.
“Why is anyone shocked? Target prides itself in its policy that allows biological men to use women’s restrooms,” he wrote on his Facebook page (I’m surprised he hasn’t been banned yet). “Customers interviewed were right—it’s very sad. And it is so preventable.”
But no matter. Despite 1.5 million people signing an American Family Association petition calling for a boycott of Target stores, the $15 billion loss the retailer has suffered since the policy was enacted (which ought to really tick off the company’s investors), CEO Brian Cornell continues to defend it.
“We took a stance,” he said in 2016.
Yep, you sure did, Brian. And so are millions of Americans who are now shopping somewhere else — or who will be after they hear about this predictable event.
