Israeli national security minister calls for EXECUTION of Palestinian prisoners with “shot to the head”
By Richard Brown // Jul 05, 2024

An Israeli government official has called for the execution of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails with a "shot to the head."

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir made this call in a video statement, Palestinian state-run news agency Wafa reported on June 30. The ultra-right official urged the Knesset, Israel's unicameral parliament, to pass a bill to this effect. According to Ben-Gvir, prisoners should receive just enough food to keep them alive until the law is enacted.

The minister also dismissed concerns about poor conditions in Israeli prisons, stating: "It is unfortunate that I have had to deal in recent days with whether Palestinian prisoners should receive fruit baskets." he reiterated his support for the said proposal to execute Palestinians in custody, which was put forward by his right-wing Otzma Yehudit party.

This was not the first time the far-right official issued such a call. In April, he advocated for the killing of Palestinian prisoners to alleviate "overcrowding" in Israeli prisons. Tel Aviv currently holds thousands of Palestinians in its network of prisons and detention camps, where allegations of torture and sexual assault are widespread. On July 1, Germany decried Ben-Gvir for his inflammatory remarks. Germany's Deputy Foreign Minister Christian Wagner told reporters in the capital Berlin: "It is a disgusting comment which we condemn." Wagner, however, did not comment on whether the remarks should have political consequences.

The Israeli official's video statement followed remarks by the Palestinian Commission of Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Club. According to the two Palestinian entities, Israeli forces have arrested more than 9,450 Palestinians from the West Bank – including Jerusalem – since the start of the ongoing war in Gaza and stepped-up raids against Palestinians.

Israel already TORTURING Palestinian prisoners in its custody

According to The Cradle, the Knesset's General Assembly approved the preliminary reading of Ben-Gvir's proposal in March of last year. But the approved proposal mandates courts to impose the death penalty on Palestinians who have carried out resistance operations against Israeli forces – in particular those "committing a murder offense motivated by racism and intending to harm the State of Israel." The bill requires two more readings in the Knesset to be enacted.

Arrests and abductions of Palestinians in both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip have increased sharply since the start of Israel's war on Gaza last October. The Palestinian Prisoners Association (PPA) reported to Reuters that Israel has abducted more than 9,170 Palestinians from the West Bank since Oct. 7. Thousands more from Gaza have been "forcibly disappeared," with Israel refusing to disclose their whereabouts.

Former detainee Ataa Shbat, upon his release, urged others to secure the release of the remaining prisoners. "People are dying. Torture which you cannot imagine unless you [experience it]. Suffering which you cannot imagine unless you experience it," he said.

The PPA reported that at least 18 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody since the war began, including six from Gaza. Among them was orthopedic surgeon Adnan al-Bursh, who was tortured to death by Israeli forces after being detained for four months.

Some of the most disturbing accounts of Israeli torture have emerged from former detainees at Israel's Sde Teiman detention center. The New York Times reported in early June that detainees from Gaza were being raped with hot metal rods and shocked in electric chairs at the desert camp.

CNN added that Israeli guards were shackling Palestinian detainees so tightly that inexperienced doctors at the camp had to amputate their limbs due to the severity of the injuries. The air at Sde Teiman is reportedly "filled with the smell of neglected wounds left to rot," according to CNN.
