Free speech on campus: Universities in Chicago and Binghamton stand on opposing sides

At a time when more and more universities seem to be caving to the absurd, anti-American demands of the Regressive Left, it’s refreshing and inspiring to see schools like the University of Chicago taking a stand and denouncing the ideas of censorship and coddling.

In a recent letter sent to the class of 2020, the dean of students, Jay Ellison, wrote, “Our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so called ‘trigger warnings,’ we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual ‘safe spaces’ where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own.”

Unfortunately, the news comes at the same time that the State University of New York at Binghamton announced a course entitled “Stop White People” that is intended for resident advisers to enroll in. Obviously they want everyone in charge to know just how evil every white person to walk the face of the earth is. Because of course they do…

The two vastly different policies are extremely indicative of modern American society as a whole. Many of us just want to be left alone and allowed to live our lives freely, while a vocal minority is determined to demonize everyone and everything that questions their beliefs. It’s a dangerous and borderline frightening situation that has sent many logical people to their breaking point.

If we aren’t free to express ourselves in a free manner — regardless of how many hurt feelings are received as a result — then are we truly free? At what point do we draw the line and stop giving in to the demands of a mentally deranged group of authoritarian lunatics?

Colleges should be places where people are allowed to exchange ideas without fear of being silenced, and while that unfortunately isn’t happening in Binghamton, at least there’s some semblance of sanity left in Chicago.

For America to return to being the Land of the Free, it has to live up to being the Home of the Brave, and we have to stop fearing the repercussions of being honest and bold.
